Arizona Ranks High for Bike Thefts

The National Insurance Crime Bureau announced the top ten states for motorcycle thefts in 2005. You might imagine that with all our sunshine and natural beauty in Arizona, we probably have more than our fair per capita share of motorcyclists.

Here are the 10 worst states for motorcycle thefts for 2005:

  1. California (9,110)

  2. Florida (6,324)

  3. Texas (5,755)

  4. North Carolina (3,053)

  5. Ohio (2,573)

  6. Arizona (2,464)

  7. New York (2,195)

  8. Indiana (2,186)

  9. Georgia (2,159)

  10. Pennsylvania (2,021)

Minibikes, minicycles, mopeds, motorbikes, motorcycles, motorscooters, and multi-wheel vehicles were included in these statistics.

In 2004 there were 2,082 thefts in Arizona, and the ranking was the same. According to the NICB, recovery rates for motorcycles are typically in the 25-30% range. The complete list for 2005, as well as 2004, is available online.

Nationally, 70,613 motorcycles were stolen in 2005 which is a slight decrease from the 71,108 stolen in 2004. This represents a loss of over $434 million to motorcycle owners and the insurance industry.

Insurance rates are high in Arizona because of our traditionally high rate of thefts of all types of vehicles.
